Rio District recall vote is Tuesday
Rio voters will head to the polls next week to decide who they want leading their school district. Then, in less than three months, they'll do it again. The K-8 Rio School District board, stymied by division and controversy, first will hold a special recall election Tuesday for three of its five board members: Eve Acosta, Simon Ayala and Ken Ortega.

New crop of 23 officers ready to join the force
The 22 men and one woman who received graduation certificates Thursday were called many things: heros, cadets, even practical jokers. Now they will be called officers and deputies. With more than 100 people snapping pictures and cheering them on at the Camarillo Community Center, the cadets celebrated completion of their training at the Ventura County Criminal Justice Training Center.

A judge ordered a courtroom closed during closing arguments Wednesday during a preliminary hearing in a case involving two suspects and three drug-related homicides. Ventura County Superior Court Judge Brian Back will continue listening to arguments by lawyers behind closed doors Friday.

Service honors war pilot final time
On Tuesday afternoon, Bert Lee Jr. took his final flight. Portraits of a young and old Lee sat on a black chest containing his ashes. Brian and Gary Lee removed the portraits of their father, along with a camouflage-green model airplane, two small American flags and a small, brown Bible, and carried the chest to a plane that would scatter his ashes into the Pacific Ocean later that afternoon.

Agencies blame gangs for increase in crimes
A suspected rise in gang activity caused a slight uptick in violent crimes in areas patrolled by the Ventura Police and the Ventura County Sheriff's departments this year, according to statistics released this week. Violent crimes, which range from homicides to aggravated assaults, rose 3.13 percent in Ventura, with reported forcible rapes having the most significant increase.

$103,000 in grantsto aid nine groups
Nine organizations with programs focused on career training, education and preventing domestic violence for women and girls in Ventura County will soon receive help from a record $103,000 in grants. The groups will get the grants Sept. 14 at Heritage Square in Oxnard by Ventura County Community Foundation's Women's Legacy Fund.

Woman accused of escaping custody
An Oxnard woman suspected of escaping the custody of a deputy to avoid returning to jail will be arraigned next week, officials said Monday. Shawntele Martinez, 29, faces a felony charge of escaping. She had been in jail on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department said.

Now, he is battling a spinal cord injury that keeps him bound to a wheelchair. Doctor gets probation in abuse case
Domestic abuse experts criticized a judge for putting a Camarillo doctor who brutally beat his wife while he was on alcohol and painkillers on probation instead of sentencing him to prison. Cherie L. Duval, president and CEO of the Coalition to End Family Violence, and Maria Collier, program manager with Interface Children Family Services/Domestic Violence Services, said the judge's lenient sentence sends the wrong message to the community.

Director fired from Community Action
The executive director of a countywide agency that assists homeless and low-income people was fired Monday. Board members for Community Action of Ventura County voted 11-0 with one abstention to fire Joseph Billingiere, who was hired in January 2005 to oversee the agency.

When I was asked by the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging to man a booth at the Ventura County Fair, I realized that I would meet a lot of seniors and have to deal with the many questions that they asked. The parking lot was close to being full when I arrived to start my shift at noon, and I wandered through the gates to join the medley of people and delightful smells of cooking.
